Google has launched an updated version of its A.I-based technology ‘SmartReply for YouTube’ and implemented in YouTube Studio. The earlier version of SmartReply was used to help suggest responses to messages in Gmail, Android’s Messages, and to more devices with Android Wear.
The new version of SmartReply for YouTube helps creators engage more easily with their viewers and learns and replies through the computationally efficient AI model, and represents the cross-lingual and character byte-based SmartReply model. Currently available in English and Spanish and will be available in more languages soon.
The earlier version of SmartReply systems depended on word-level preprocessing and was tuned for a limited number of languages and narrow genres of writing. But YouTube creators and viewers are very diverse, and their comments reveal complex patterns of language switching, abbreviated words, slang, inconsistent usage of punctuation, and heavy use of emoji. To give the right response Google decided to encode the text without any preprocessing.
Instead of using a separate model for each language, Google opted to train a single cross-lingual model for all supported languages. This allows the support of mixed-language usage in the comments and enables the model to utilize the learning of common elements in one language for understanding another.
