Airbus Begins Major Downsizing – To Layoff 15000 Employees Worldwide

Airbus will lay off about 15,000 employees – more than 10% of its workforce, over the next 12 months. With the travel sector in crisis and airlines struggling to survive due to the pandemic, there is a huge dip in the demand for new aircraft. And that means Airbus has had to curb production.

Having the full support of the government, Airbus tried to delay these layoffs. There are more than 6,000 workers in France and the United Kingdom who are on government-funded furlough programs. Airbus has to cut more jobs to sustain and is trying to reduce the number of layoffs through long-term partial employment, voluntary departures, and early retirement programs.

The job losses will fall most heavily in its production facilities:

• Germany           – 5000
• France               – 5000
• United Kingdom – 1700
• Spain                 – 900

And the remainder will be cut at other sites around the world.
